STAND UP FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS!
Durango School Board races are yet again being unduly influenced by people worked up about Pride flags in classrooms, fear of transgender athletes invading our school teams, safe spaces for Native and LGBTQ students, and books to ban. Candidates were solicited by an unnamed conservative dark money group with the warning "48 hours to file to be a candidate. All expenses covered."
Local, incumbent candidates - and parents of Durango schoolkids - are expecting a last minute windfall of money, negative advertising and flyers to hit voters in mid October, too late (as always) to push back with facts and logic.
Durango schools are doing great! Just last week: Durango School District has been inducted into the global nonprofit Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools, a national network of school districts that “connects and supports the most forward-thinking leaders in education,” according to the League's website. As of September 2025, more than 150 school districts in 34 states were signed on as members of the coalition. Durango School District and Adams 12 Five Star Schools in Thornton are the only two districts representing Colorado in the league.

Candidates will need help with dropping off flyers in neighborhoods to keep mailing costs down. Each postcard costs .74 with mailing (only about .21 without postage/handling)! To help, contact Erika.

The sooner YOU VOTE, the better! Vote for the 2nd candidate each time (the Republicans drew first billings on the ballot). While you're voting, support school lunches and our much needed La Plata County sales tax increase!

Vivienda para trabajadores YIMBY
El Durango Herald informó que los residentes de algunos barrios locales han expresado una oposición significativa a la propuesta municipal de construir viviendas para trabajadores en su vecindario. Una forma de apoyar la construcción de viviendas para trabajadores locales es crear un grupo "YIMBY" (que significa "Sí, en mi patio") que asista a reuniones selectas de la Comisión de Planificación para defender los proyectos propuestos de Vivienda Asequible y para Trabajadores. Estos grupos "YIMBY" se crearon en 2014 y ahora tienen presencia nacional. También animamos a la Ciudad a invitar a las personas que residan en estas viviendas a asistir a estas reuniones. With Federal employees furloughed now, SNAP food assistance disappearing next Saturday, and the subsidies for 'Obamacare' ending right before 'open enrollment' for next year (with doubling or tripling premium costs in some states), it is imperative that Republicans work with Democrats to come up with solutions to help all Americans.
