Say NO to the USDA Rescinding the Roadless Rule!
The Roadless Area Conservation Rule is a federal policy that safeguards some of the nation’s most wild and intact National Forest lands, protecting clean water, important wildlife habitats, backcountry experiences, and preserving tribal lands. The USDA (which oversees the Forest Service) plans to rescind the Roadless Rule, opening 45 million acres of public lands to new road building. Learn more.
Public comment period to the USDA is open through Friday, September 19.

CALL TO ACTION
Don't Let the USDA Rescind the Roadless Rule!
Why does the USDA want to rescind the rule? Commercial timber harvesting, oil and gas, and mineral extraction all require roads.
The administration says the rescission is for wildfire mitigation but it would *increase* wildfires – 90% of wildfires begin within half a mile of a road! Plus, there are 370,000 miles of roads across the National Forest (more than double the US highway system!)
Public comment period to the USDA is open through Friday, September 19.
Focus comments on the relevant environmental impacts associated with rescinding the rule:
-
climate change
-
endangered species + migratory birds
-
watersheds + water quality
-
soil health
-
wildfire management + mitigation
-
old growth forests
-
pest management
-
tribal communities
-
recreation access + noise.
Also, tell our members of Congress to oppose rescinding the roadless rule!

Durango Minimum Wage - NOW!
WORKERS OVER BILLIONAIRES!!!
Sign the petition to ask Durango City Council to raise the minimum wage in the city.
A 2019 law allowed ALL Colorado municipalities to raise their minimum wage as much as 15% per year. Durango has not explored this option. So far, the City has validated the business viewpoint that such a raise would doom their businesses.
The 2025 Colorado state minimum wage is $14.81 - a raise of 15% would add another $2.22/hr for a total of $17.03/hour. That much of an increase won’t happen so let’s ask the City Council to adopt the 2026 state minimum wage, which will be $15.15.
In Colorado, only Denver City and County and Boulder City and County have adopted the incrimental option. Neither city or county has suffered as data shows. They used a 3- or 5-step phase-in to raise wages gradually. DuranGO Forward is a local group urging our City Council to consider the same approach, since they will not adopt a 10% or 15% immediate raise. Durango’s essential workers would benefit greatly from this.
If you recall the “Thrive” effort for a living wage (prior to the 2020 pandemic, now ended), they got many forward-thinking businesses to recognize that paying a living wage is necessary to maintain their business, so they continue to pay well above the minimum wage. Now, we’re not even asking for a ‘living wage’ which would be well above $20/hr. Let’s bring the other city businesses that pay minimum wages onboard - remember, a rising tide lifts all boats.

What: Some local folks would like to start a local group to raise money for mostly local environmental nonprofits.
Why: Only 3% of charitable giving goes to environmental organizations. Before we start this project, we want to see if there is enough interest. Thank you!!
Workforce Housing YIMBY
The Durango Herald has reported that residents in some local neighborhoods have expressed significant opposition to the City’s proposal to build workforce housing in their neighborhood. One way to support local workforce housing is to have a 'YIMBY' group, meaning 'Yes, in my backyard', to show up at select Planning Commission meetings to speak in favor of proposed Affordable and Workforce Housing projects. These YIMBY groups started in 2014, and are now nation-wide. We also want to encourage the City to invite folks who may live in this housing to attend these meetings. Anyone interested in being a member of the “YIMBY” group, please contact us.
