Thank you to ALL of the volunteers who were street monitors, manned tables, helped with set up and take down, and those who donated to help defray costs of permits, etc. We could not make this happen without ALL of you!

ISSUE: PUBLIC LANDS SELL-OFF
SENATE BILL Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (SENR) bill for the Reconciliation Budget
Public lands in Southwest Colorado could be up for sale - The Durango Herald
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT:
SENR bill: Subtitle C – Lands, on page 30 of the full bill, (condensed version) lists the mandatory disposal of BLM and FS lands. There are 250 million acres listed as being eligible for sale; of that, the bill mandates a minimum of 3.3 million acres be sold. Lands in the San Juan National Forest and BLM Southwest Colorado district are included in the eligible acreage, see this map. Lands that are eligible for sale include recreation areas and grazing lands. As reported in The Durango Herald: Areas such as Animas Mountain, Horse Gulch, Falls Creek and Big Canyon – all partly or fully managed by BLM – are subject to sale. Ranchers who maintain grazing permits on public lands could potentially see those lands sold to private buyers.
Other public land issues in the SENR bill include:
-
Cuts industry fees that pay to use our public land resources
-
Lets developers buy their way around the courts
-
Ramps up logging and oil & gas development (exempted from judicial review)
-
includes rollbacks to protections for Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Timing: The bill is still being debated in the Senate Committee; call and email so the sell-off will be removed from the bill and never make it to the full Senate vote. However, the Senate seeks to vote on the full reconciliation bill by July 4.
SUGGESTED MEMBER SCRIPT:
“Hi, my name is (full name). I'm a constituent from (city & zip code). I insist you oppose the inclusion of public land sales in the Senate budget reconciliation bill that would mandate the sale of 3.3M acres of public land. This is ILLEGAL. It bypasses the Federal Land Facilitation Transaction Act that specifically states that all proceeds from the sale of public lands MUST go back into the conservation of public lands. Keep public lands in public hands.”
For Bennet and Hickenlooper, please call to thank them so they have numbers showing the wide support for our public lands.
